An attorney for retired Greenville police officers told us Thursday they were in the beginning phases of a lawsuit against the city for breach of contract.
According to Robert Hoskins, the attorney for the officers in the case, some officers -- including several former chiefs of police -- were suing the city of Greenville because the city decided to withdraw retirement benefits effective Jan. 1.
Hoskins said the decision was made to withdraw the benefits due to bad economic conditions.
He said it wasn’t a class action suit, despite the number of officers involved.
Right now, Hoskins said, the lawsuit is being reviewed by a circuit court judge who will decide to dismiss the case or not.
The benefits were originally promised to the officers until they were 65 and included free health care.
