This year's State Christmas tree is in place and decorated in front of the Statehouse in Columbia. It will be officially lit Sunday evening at the annual Governor's Carolighting ceremony.
There have been no problems with this year's tree, unlike some previous years. In 2003, the people in charge of decorating the tree wanted to try something new that would make the tree really sparkle. Instead of traditional ornaments, they decorated the tree with CDs. They did twist and catch the light, making the tree sparkle. But they also caught the wind, sending many of the CDs flying off the tree, smashing on the sidewalk and putting passersby at risk.
The next year, organizers used a different kind of tree whose branches grow up instead of just out. When it was trimmed at the bottom so it would fit in its hole that took away the greenery further up the tree, leaving huge gaps around the base of the tree where there were no branches. Several smaller trees had to be brought in and placed around the base to fill in the missing greenery.
