A line of storms from Anderson through Greenwood County and into Laurens County caused numerous trees to topple and several traffic accidents Wednesday night. One home in Anderson on Virginia Circle was nearly cut in two by one large tree. A man was in the home at the time, and two Anderson University students rushed into to help the man.
“We thought maybe the tree hit Will’s house, but when we looked and saw it laying on this house right here…it was crazy from there.” said Zach Garner. His friend, Will Hegwood added, ” I see these guys out here and then I thought, ' oh gosh something fell on my car', and then I thought about the lady next door and so we started banging on her house and the whole house is just split in the middle…so it’s kind of sad for them."
Neighbors tell us the tree next to the one that fell had just been cut back. The fallen tree was supposed to be cut within the next few days because it was dead and posed a danger.
Another tree smashed into a home near Best Lane, causing heavy damage to the home and ripping out power lines, which stretched across Hampton Street. A woman was in the home at the time, but not injured.
In Williamston, three teens were sent to a local hospital after the truck they were traveling in ran off a highway and into a rain swollen creek. The accident happened on Mills St. near Williamston around 8pm Wednesday when a truck with four teens inside, hydroplaned and slid into a nearby creek. The truck landed upside down in the creek, called Big Creek, and the teens had to kick out the windows to escape. There was heavy rain at the time of the accident, and the creek was swollen with the excess rain. Three teens were transported by EMS to the hospital; the fourth was taken from the scene by a family member.
On I-26 in Laurens County, a series of accidents had the interstate shut down for a number of hours. The accidents occurred between mile markers 48 and 55, and on I-385 near the I-26 split. No word on the extent of injuries.
