LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The personality of Arkansas anchorwoman Anne Pressly made her a hit with television viewers.
Now, police want to know whether the South Carolina native's celebrity made her a target.
The popular KATV anchorwoman was in critical but stable condition Tuesday after a severe beating in her home. Investigators aren't sure whether she was the random victim of a home invasion or a target because of her high-profile job.
The 26-year-old Pressly grew up in Greenville, S.C., but moved to Arkansas in high school. She was found bloodied and unconscious in her bed Monday morning, a half-hour before she was due on the set at Little Rock's ABC affiliate.
Police say Pressly's mother found her lying in her bed with severe wounds. Officers are talking with her co-workers to see whether she had any problems recently.
Frances Reaves Clark of Greenville was a childhood friend of Pressly's.
She tells the Greenville News, "Even though Anne has been gone for some years, it still hits home. Anne has always put smiles on people's faces and will continue to do so through this hard time."
Pressly appears briefly in Oliver Stone's new movie "W" about President Bush. She portrays a conservative commentator who speaks favorably of Bush's 2003 "Mission Accomplished" event on an aircraft carrier.
