A spokesman with Western Carolina University said two students have been charged by the Lawrence County district attorney in relation to a dead bear dumped on the University campus Thursday.
Authorities say 20-year old Marvin Caleb Williams and 18-year old Mathew Colton Williams have been charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct and a wildlife act without a license or permit. The two students are brothers from Wilke’s county.. north of the Winston salem market.
The two are among seven implicated in the act, according to campus reports.
They're accused of dumping the dead body of a bear on campus, wrapped in Obama campaign signs. The university is in Cullowhee, North Carolina, in Jackson County. The students told officers they found the bear during a camping trip and pulled the signs from the roadside to keep blood off their truck.
But hundreds of students and faculty are concerned this wasn't a prank.
Thursday, they demanded action from the school's chancellor.
"They're blowing it off saying it was just a prank..but at the same time there are hundreds of students here...that are hurt..and..its just not right," said Jasmine Wilson, a student.
Campus police tell us they are planning to charge the students, and are about to hand over the investigation to the district attorney, who will decide how serious the charges will be.
"We're very concerned with how our community perceives this...and we want to take steps to make closure..so our campus can heal from this incident," said campus police chief Tom Johnson.
North Carolina wildlife officers, as well as the Secret Service have also been involved in this investigation.
