COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford will allow $488 million in state spending cuts to go into effect without his signature.
Sanford complained Thursday the Legislature tied his hands by limiting where Cabinet agencies can make cuts. But he said he expects further reductions will be needed amid the struggling economy and asked legislators to give him more authority to deal with spending decisions.
The budget cuts took effect this morning with health care programs and colleges taking the hardest hit.
If Sanford had vetoed items in the 60-page bill, legislators would have returned to Columbia today (Friday) to decide whether to override the vetoes.
