South Carolina's Emergency Operations Center outside Columbia was buzzing with activity Friday afternoon as Tropical Storm Hanna was bearing down on the state. But the activity was only because the storm was getting close, not in response to the fact that Hanna was not turning away from the state as expected.
Thursday, forecasters thought Hanna would head toward South Carolina then turn north, only skirting the state. Now, it looks like the storm will make landfall in northern South Carolina.
Joe Farmer, spokesman for the South Carolina Emergency Management Division, says, "Based on the size of the storm and the impact that we expect on South Carolina, we feel comfortable with the way things are going right now." That's because, no matter what direction the storm takes, the state has people and equipment in place and ready, he says.
Farmer says as of late Friday afternoon, 58 people were in shelters in the state.
