As many as a million people in Southern Texas have evacuated their homes, many
of them after mandatory evacuation orders.
Those people include residents of Galveston and low lying areas of Houston.
But many other people are staying in Houston, bracing for the arrival of
Hurricane Ike.
The storm could cause extensive damage to Houston, the nation's fourth biggest
city, as high winds batter the region.
Forecasters say those winds could reach nearly 100 miles an hour.
