The man charged with murder in Travelers Rest has been found shot Monday morning.
The Greenville County Sheriff's Office says they found Jose Reyes with what they believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound at 781 Piedmont Highway around 8:30am Monday.
Deputies were called there after a report of a gunshot victim and a suspicious car in that area. Reyes was found lying on the ground behind the business on Piedmont Highway after deputies say they believe he shot himself in the head.
Investigators say Reyes was taken to the Greenville Hospital System in critical condition.
Reyes, 35, is charged with murder in a signed arrest warrant in the death of Jerry Michael Swain. The warrant says Reyes shot and killed Swain with a pistol at Swain's home at 23 Poplar Valley Lane in Travelers Rest on Sunday. Investigators say Reyes and his wife lived with Swain and his girlfriend on and off, and Swain's girlfriend is Reyes' wife's aunt.
Deputies had been looking for Swain's car, a 1993 Honda Civic, that they believed Reyes took after the homicide. Investigators say that car was found near where Reyes was discovered Monday morning.
Chris Stokes, who works at Image Sign and Design, says his uncle found Reyes in front of the business when he came into work Monday morning. Stokes says they did not know Reyes, and did not know he was an accused killer. Stokes says his uncle thought the man lying in the front yard had been beat up, and immediately called 911.
Stokes says he's glad the shooting didn't happen during business hours.
"It's always dangerous," Stokes says. "You never know what's going to happen so, I'm glad that nobody else got hurt."
