Only a week after returning from a 3-week assignment as a Red Cross volunteer in Lousiana, Robert Neal is now headed out to Texas to volunteer there, according to a press release from the Upstate Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Originally sent to provide meals for Hurricane Gustav victims, Neal will now deliver hot meals to Hurricane Ike victims in Texas.
He joins over 20 volunteers form the Upstate who are helping the area recover.
To date, the Red Cross has dispatched over 15,000 volunteers from across the nation in the last twelve weeks. This is more than the Red Cross would normally assign to disasters in a year, the release stated.
Already, over 2.4 million meals have been served to victims housed in 914 shelters and evacuation centers.
Due to such a large need, the Red Cross says their disaster relief fund is depleted.
The Upstate chapter is attempting to raise $558,600 for the fund.
