Carolinas Still Suffering From Gas Shortage

Upstate drivers should be able to find fuel available at one out of every two gas stations by Friday, according to a spokesman for AAA Carolinas.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Drivers in South Carolina's urban areas are still having trouble finding gas, and car towing in those areas is on the rise.

AAA Carolinas spokesman Tom Crosby says the group has seen a 25 percent increase in car towing over the last few weeks in parts of North Carolina and South Carolina where availability was scarce.

In Greenville, motorists still had to drive to a few stations to find fuel. Columbia and Spartanburg also had limited availability, though it was slightly easier to find gas along the coast.

Authorities say availability is beginning to improve.

Prices in South Carolina remain stable and have dropped in some areas.

Crosby says the average price of regular gas in South Carolina on Monday was $3.80 per gallon.

The national average was $3.64.

Some NC stations have fuel, others don't

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Promised infusions of gasoline to areas of North Carolina that have been out of gas since last week are slow arriving and officials say all they can do is urge that drivers be patient.

In the state's largest city, Charlotte motorists still are confronted by closed gas stations and lines where fuel is available. The same problem persists in the state's mountain region where the shortage hit first.

The Charlotte Observer reported Monday that an auto club spokesman said it takes time to move gasoline through a pipeline that was starved when Hurricane Ike crippled Texas refineries.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports that many stations in the mountains were closed Sunday and waiting for supplies to arrive from gasoline distributors.

Upstate Gas Prices from AAA:
Anderson: Average this week - $3.82, Last week - $3.80
Greenville: Average this week - $3.87, Last week - $3.87
Spartanburg: Average this week - $3.79, Last week – $3.79
Asheville: Average this week - $4.04, Last week - $4.14
Hendersonville: Average this week - $3.99, Last week - $4.00
