Jimmy Tobias was born in 1955, the son of William and Eva Strank Tobias.
Tobias grew up in the Camp Croft community and graduated from Spartanburg High School. He worked in his father's textile business, Tobias Textiles.
Gardner became a licensed pilot and eventually earned certification as an airline transport pilot. He went to work for the South Carolina Forestry Commission in 1983 where he served for more than 25 years. Gardner began his career as a suppression/detection pilot and worked as Aviation Manager until being named Chief Pilot.
Gardner has been married for 30 years to Cindy Tobias and they have six children. They attend Morningside Baptist Church where Gardner serves as a deacon and teaches Sunday School. Gardner also leads a Sunday morning sunrise devotional time with City of Spartanburg Fire Departments.
