COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina investigators have found no violations of a tough new immigration law after checking large businesses for a month.
The Greenville News reported Sunday that Jim Knight, spokesman for the state Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, said no one has written to his agency about immigration problems concerning companies with 100 or more workers. Knight said the fact that no violations were found isn't surprising, given that most of the telephoned immigration complaints his agency has received are about small businesses, which cannot be checked until next summer.
A new provision in state law that took effect at the start of last month requires businesses with 100 or more employees to check the workers' legal status through a federal database.
