Spartanburg, S.C. – After only 12 weeks of free training, hundreds of Upstate residents could have the opportunity to interview for one of more than 500 full-time job openings forecasted to be available next year with local automotive suppliers.

“Between March through August of next year, local companies that serve as suppliers to the automotive industry will need to fill between 350 to 600 jobs,” said Dr. Dave Just, vice president of corporate and community education for Spartanburg Community College. “Through a partnership with the Workforce Investment Board, SCC will provide the continuing education training for these positions that will train workers to serve as production operators at any of these companies.”

Funded by a grant from AdvanceSC, the training is designed to meet national standards set by the Manufacturing Skills Standards Council and will focus on workplace safety, quality practices and measurements, and manufacturing processes and production. Those completing the training will be MSSC certified production technicians.

To enroll in the program, individuals must first attend one of several orientation sessions that will be offered at the SCC central campus on Tuesday, August 4 or Saturday, August 8 by registering via phone at (864) 562-4168 or online at www.onestopcareer.com/registration.aspx.

To be accepted into the program, individuals must have a high school diploma or GED, score the minimum required on a WorkKeys assessment geared specifically toward MSSC training and pass a drug-screening test as a part of the Workforce Investment Board application process. The first series of classes will begin in mid-October 2009. Those completing the 12-week training program will be guaranteed an interview with a local employer.

For additional information, or to register to attend an information session, contact the Workforce Investment Board at (864) 562-4168.
