CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - There's a controversy over the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division budget, with SLED Chief Reggie Lloyd calling the accounting records of his predecessor "a
joke."

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports Tuesday that Lloyd commented after the newspaper sought agency budget records. Lloyd says when he took office in January 2008, he spent 18 months putting together an accounting system.

But Lloyd's predecessor says every penny spent during his 20 years as chief was accounted for. Robert Stewart says the agency had centralized record keeping and regularly received clean audits.

But Lloyd says he can't provide the newspaper information to show how budget cuts have affected services because of what he says were Stewart's shoddy records.
