COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford is set to return to work after a two-week European vacation with his wife and four sons in an effort to fix things with his family.
When he left the country on July 23, Sanford said he would return to work on Wednesday.
Sanford returned from a nearly weeklong disappearance June 24 to reveal he was in Argentina with his mistress, not hiking the Appalachian Trail as his staff had believed. The governor says he considered canceling the long-planned trip in light of the scandal, but it was too important for his family.
Sanford returns on the same day his chief spokesman is leaving. Communications director Joel Sawyer is resigning effective Wednesday to start his own consulting firm.
