Greenville County Council took the first step Tuesday night in making the expenditures of the county accessible to everyone, via the Internet. Council member Willis Meadows introduced a motion during the meeting that would place all county expenditures over $500.00 on the county’s website. This would include all credit card transactions from cards issued to county officers and employees. Meadows tells News Channel 7 that the county “owes it to the taxpayers because it is their money.” He also added the county had, “nothing to hide in what it spends.”
During discussions about the motion, the county administrator suggested placing all expenditures, no matter the amount, on the website, something Meadows says is a distinct possibility.
The council referred the motion to the finance committee, who will help determine a cost, then will send it back to the council at their next meeting.
