Inside Showcase Marketing in Greenville, time is ticking. Employees are working the phones, racing to rally a community for a little boy. The teen, named Alvin, is from Liberia. "He's such a sweet boy," says April Gray of Water of Life Ministries. Alvin suffers from tuberculosis and doctors believe he has only weeks to live. The Liberian government has granted a Greenville family permission to adopt the child. Now, organizers face another challenge. Gray says, "Everything is in place. It has been one series of miracles after another. The only thing lacking is transportation."
The cost for a medically manned flight to bring Alvin to the Upstate is nearly $100,000. Gray and others are getting the word out through messages on Twitter and Facebook. Jordana Megonigal, the editor of Business Black Box magazine, is also helping. Her magazine has offered free ad space to anyone who donates $1000. "We had one local business leader that said you know I don't have any planes, but I can give you money."
The money is growing. Organizers have raised more than $12,000 so far. "They said they've received donations from four dollars to one thousand," says Gray. Even more, they're spreading the message of a little boy so many have come to love. "It's been amazing to watch the upstate rally around this family and say, this is our's. This is our family. White, black, rich or poor, they're coming together," says Geoff Wasserman of Showcase Marketing. That's why his business will keep calling, hoping that one phone call gives Alvin a chance to live. "We just want to bring Alvin home."
