Strong thunderstorms moved across the Charlotte region Wednesday afternoon and evening, bringing high winds, strong rain, pelting hail and massive lightning strikes.
Throughout the area trees were downed and power was out with nearly 40,000 customers in the dark in North and South Carolina at the height of the storms.
In Union County, several trees were down in Monroe.
Duke Power reported that 39,000 customers in North and South Carolina were without power at 7:15 p.m. Nearly 15,000 of those were in Mecklenburg County. Other counties that were hit with widespread power outages were Burke, Rowan and Yadkin.
