A Clemson student has died of bacterial meningitis, according to Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley.
Danielle Rae Fleming died Saturday August 1st, at Oconee Medical Center. Kelley says that autopsy results indicate that Fleming died of the disease..
According to Clemson Public Relations, Danielle was originally from of Glen Ridge, New Jersey and she passed away after visiting the Clemson campus with her parents.
She was staying at the Martin Inn with her family, preparing for her junior year, when she became ill on Friday. Early Saturday, her illness worsened, and she was transported to Oconee Memorial by Clemson EMS. She died at the hospital. Fleming was a Mathematical Science major.
Clemson is waiting on the official autopsy report from Kandy Kelly Pickens County Coroner, to determine cause of death.
DHEC can confirm they are responding to a meningitis case in Pickens County. They are now doing a close contact investigation to prevent the spread of the disease. This investigation includes looking at all the circles of people who may have had contact with the Fleming, and evaluating all those at risk.
Some of the early symptoms of meningitis include: High fever, painful headache, stiff neck, nausea, and vomiting.
DHEC suggests that you follow these preventative measures to stay healthy: Wash your hands often, refrain from sharing food, drinks, or utensils and don’t use lip balm or anything that carry oral germs.
Funeral services for student Danielle Rae Fleming will be this weekend in New Jersey.
The viewing will be 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, at Martin’s Home for Service, 48 Elm St., Montclair, N.J. The viewing will be followed by a service and internment at Rosedale Cemetery.
