COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - An Associated Press investigation has found South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford used state aircraft for personal and political trips - contrary to state law that requires the planes only be used for official business.
Records show that since Sanford took office in 2003, he's flown to locations of his children's sporting events, political party gatherings and a birthday party for a campaign donor. His spokesman says the governor only used state aircraft for state business. But government watchdogs and a state senator who reviewed the AP findings say Sanford went over the line.
Fountain Inn Republican Sen. David Thomas has been investigating Sanford since news of the governor's affair broke in June. He says the records indicate misuse of state property.
