South Carolina Employment Commission Director to Resign

Ted Halley

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The executive director of the South Carolina Employment Security Commission says he will resign at the end of the year.

Ted Halley sent an e-mail to employees Tuesday morning announcing his plans to leave his post December 31. He says he has had a "great career" with the agency and encouraged workers to continue to "protect the integrity of the agency."

Agency spokesman Rodney Welch says Halley has not given more details about his decision.

Halley's announcement comes after months of record-setting unemployment numbers and criticism from Gov. Mark Sanford over job statistics. Sanford had criticized the commission for what he thinks is a lack of detail in its collection of data about who is losing jobs.
