The percentage of African American parents who say they will volunteer this school year has more than doubled in the past year, and a new survey says it's because of the President.
American public schools are experiencing what's being called the Obama Effect. Since Barrack Obama became president, not only has he had positive effect on the academic expectations of black Americans, more African American parents are saying they plan to volunteer at their children’s' schools according to a non-profit organization that promotes parental involvement. According to USA Today, GreatSchools finds a jump of 37 percentage-points in the portion of African American parents who say they'll volunteer in their child's school - 60% vs. 23% a year ago.
Parents like Josie Gray Lynch, who has a 14-year-old daughter. She says, "Lead by example, and then you can say I had a part of that when history is made... and the future comes, you can be part of that, even if you were never seen, but you worked behind the scenes."
Beck Academy Principal Dr. Brody Bricker says he welcomes all volunteers. "Parents have many different schedules. Some work first shift, second shift third shift, and so we have opportunities for parents to volunteer on their time schedule," according to Bricker.
