Monday was the first day back to school for several public upstate school districts. Union, Oconee, Cherokee and Spartanburg District 5 were back in session. One thing parents will notice across the State this year is larger class sizes.
Cherokee County School District Superintendent Dr. Bill Jamess says his district's 10,000 students and all of the buses made it to school without problems. James says budget cuts means they couldn't replace some of the administrators and personnel who left last year, but that he'll be putting people before material things, because educators will tell you it teachers which really count.
Gaffney Middle School Principal Jean Brewington says, "We lost an assistant principal at the beginning of last year and that position was not filled. Some of our class sizes are larger. We are trying very desperately to use what resources we have. We know the biggest resource we have is quality - highly qualified teachers."
Cherokee County says stimulus money helped it save a number of special education programs and all of its 4-k classes.
Public school students in Spartanburg, Anderson and Laurens Counties go back to school Tuesday. Greenville County public school students start on Wednesday.
