A Cherokee County Sheriff's Deputy was fired Tuesday prior to being arrested by State Law Enforcement Division agents.

Troy Cooper, 56, of Gaffney is charged with misconduct in office. According to SLED, Cooper exchanged marijuana, money and "contraband" for sex with a confidential informant. The arrest warrant states that the exchanges were verified through recorded telephone conversations. It also states that the activity took place between March 2008 and August 14, 2009.

A spokesperson for the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office says Sheriff Bill Blanton requested the SLED investigation on Monday after learning of the alleged misconduct.

The spokesperson could not verify how long Cooper worked for the department. He says Cooper's most recent job duties included serving civil papers and working security at the courthouse. Prior to that, he worked at the Cherokee County Detention Center until August 2008. Cooper was booked into the very same detention center Tuesday evening and released a few hours later on $5,000 surety bond.

Cooper is married. Neither he nor his family members wished to comment on Wednesday.
