MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - Business leaders and elected officials along South Carolina's Grand Strand are discussing offshore energy and how it might affect tourism.
A Wednesday meeting in Myrtle Beach comes almost a year after Congress lifted a moratorium on offshore drilling off the Atlantic coast. Two years ago, the state General Assembly set up a committee to assess the feasibility of natural gas exploration off the coast.
That panel is expected to issue a report soon.
One of the meeting participants is Michael Whatley, executive director of the Southeast Energy Alliance.
Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand - the 60 miles of beaches reaching from Georgetown to the North Carolina state line are the heart of South Carolina's $16 billion tourism industry.
