While two candidates have already announced plans to run for Spartanburg Mayor later this year, a prominent city councilwoman has decided not to run.

Spartanburg city councilwoman Linda Dogan tells News Channel 7 that despite urging to run for the position she has decided not to run for the position and instead will file for re-election for her current city council seat Friday at 11 am at Spartanburg City Hall. Dogan says she wants to continue to serve her constituents.

Earlier this week, Spartanburg businessman Mike Fowler said he will file papers on Monday to begin his bid for the seat, which will be vacated by Bill Barnet, who announced earlier this month that he would not seek re-election. Fowler, a lifelong resident, says he wants to encourage entrepreneurship by creating more jobs through small business and if elected, plans to forge partnerships with health organizations and fitness trainers in an attempt to attack health issues, especially childhood obesity.

Fowler has been a volunteer with Spartanburg School District 7 schools and was a chef for 27 years. He becomes the second candidate to file for the position. Just last week, Spartanburg philanthropist Jennifer Evins announced her plans to run.

Evins has been active in raising money for the Chapman Cultural Center and she serves as a trustee for the Spartanburg County Foundation. She is also a former Public Affairs Manager at WSPA.
