Greenville police say three men told an elderly woman they were with Greenville Water System and needed to inspect the water inside her home, but instead robbed her.
The 88 year old woman, who did not wish to be identified, told News Channel 7 one of the men told her that her neighbor had been digging in the backyard and busted a pipe. The man also told her he needed to check her water to make sure it wasn’t muddy.
“They had the chapter and verse written,” she said about the scam. She says she let the man in after he told of the problem.
"He said, well ma'am, i'm from Greenville Water and we're checking because your neighbor done some digging in the backyard and split pipe," she said.
She says the man, who identified himself as "Anthony," turned on her kitchen faucet and her bathroom tub.
"He said okay, we are going to let that run," the woman said. "And what we are going to do is to see if any dirt or discoloration comes out of that water."
But little did she know that the noise of running water was muffling the sound of the other two men walking into the home and ransacking her bedroom. After a few minutes, the men disappeared and she began to suspect something was wrong.
"They checked out everything they wanted," she said. "What they were looking for was cash and that's what they got."
The woman says when she called Greenville Water Systems they told her they weren’t working in her neighborhood that day. She says she called police once she realized her jewelry had been ransacked and money was missing from her drawer.
“You feel violated is what you feel," she said. "Don’t ever open the door for anyone you don’t know."
And she says that before she opens the door for a stranger again, she will call the police first.
"If you have any questions, first check it out before you let them come in," she warned. "I won't open my door for strangers."
Investigators are looking for the three men and a white pickup truck.
