COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for killing his friend in a dispute over the annual South Carolina-Clemson football game.
The State newspaper of Columbia reported Wednesday that James Quick pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the Nov. 25, 2006, death of 43-year-old Richard Johnson.
Lexington County Coroner Harry Harman said previously that Johnson died from a single shot to the chest from a high-powered rifle.
Prosecutors say the Lexington residents hunted together that morning, then drank beer and watched the game. The two friends had bet $20 on the game - Quick took game-winner South Carolina, while Johnson bet on Clemson.
Authorities say Quick went to his car after an argument and got his hunting rifle.
Quick was sentenced on Monday.
