After almost 50 years in politics, longtime U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy has passed away at age 77.
Kennedy followed in the footsteps of his older brother John and Bobby and committed his life to public service. Although he served in Massachusetts, Senator Kennedy’s presence was felt in the Upstate.
Former Congresswoman Liz Patterson tells News Channel 7 that when she ran for office in 1986, Senator Kennedy donated money to her campaign, in part to thank her for all the work her father had done in helping JFK's campaign decades before.
Others who didn't even support Ted Kennedy’s politics say America lost a great politician.
“He's the last of the Kennedys… and anybody who tries to take their place, it's gonna be hard to do,” says Teresa Bagwell of Gaffney.
“He was left to lead the Kennedy family. I think when it started out he was not to be the one as we know. Joe was then John, then Bobby. The mantle was handed down to him and I think he carried it very, very well,” says Patterson.
Although Ted Kennedy is the end of the big-named Kennedys, former Congresswoman Patterson feels you will hear from the next generation of Kennedys for years to come.
