KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The FBI says it has identified a man suspected of robbing at least 10 banks. He is believed to held up banks in Tennessee, the Carolinas and Kentucky, including First Citizens Bank in Hendersonville, NC on July 29 and United Services Credit Union in Fletcher on May 15.
The other bank robberies attributed to 36-year-old Chad E. Schaffner were a Wachovia Bank in Forest Acres, S.C., on May 28; First National Bank in Mount Pleasant, S.C., on June 19; Lumbee Guaranty National Bank in Fayetteville on July 6; Southern Bank in Edenton on July 15; First Palmetto Savings Bank in Myrtle Beach, S.C., on Aug. 10; and two banks in Jefferson City, Tenn., and Morristown, Tenn., last week.
The FBI's Knoxville office issued a press release late Thursday saying an arrest warrant has been issued for 36-year-old Chad E.
Schaffner, charging bank robbery and use of a firearm during a bank robbery. The statement doesn't provide Schaffner's hometown or say where he was last seen. But he is considered armed and dangerous. And he may be driving a black GMC pickup with Tennessee plates or a red Chevrolet pickup with South Carolina tags. If you see him, call 911.
The FBI credits his identification to tips received from an electronic billboard campaign that's been running for about a week across the South.
