Authorities are searching for Tasha McMahand, in connection with a major mail theft ring that spans across the upstate.
Jack Galvin, with the Postal Inspector's Office, tells News Channel 7 that this scheme that has probably been going on for about a year, with Tasha Mcmahand as the ringleader. Authorities caught up with her in a hotel months ago, and essentially found a "mobile crime lab" in her room that included printers, fake checks, and other tools used to steal people's identity and their money.
According to Galvin, McMahand and others stole pieces of mail and used one of the checks to steal the bank routing number and print counterfeit checks under a different name. They estimate at least 18 individuals or businesses have become targets.
After McMahand's arrest, she posted bond and was released from jail. After that time, Galvin says his office linked McMahan to other cases and victims. The Postal Inspector's Office estimate at least $250,000 or more has been stolen so far.
