A man has been charged following a chase in Henderson County Friday.
Paul Shannon Craig, 33, was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle without a license and felony fleeing to elude after he led law enforcement on a chase that ended when he collided with a pickup truck that left three people, including Craig, hospitalized.
The Henderson County Sheriff's Office says that a detective was conducting surveillance of a residence believed to be involved in criminal activities. According to a statement, the deputy spotted a silver Acura four-door sedan, driven by Craig, that was leaving the area and driving erratic. After following the car, the detective noticed it had an expired license plate and recognized Craig as a habitual criminal offender and driving while his license was expired.
The detective initiated a traffic stop and pulled the vehicle Craig was driving over and into a parking lot on Dana Road. As the detective exited the vehicle, Craig accelerated out of the parking lot at a high rate of speed and onto Dana Road. The detective then proceeded to pursue Craig toward an intersection at Dana Road and Tracey Grove Road. Noticing the vehicle was approaching the intersection and the light was red, the detective stopped pursuit, but Craig ended up swerving around one vehicle and then hit the pickup truck head-on.
The Acura flipped several times before coming to a stop. Craig and his passenger, 54-year old David Charles Moody, of Hendersonville, were transported by ambulance to Mission Hospital. The driver of the pickup truck was transported to Pardee Hospital by Henderson County EMS.
The accident remains under investigation by the Hendersonville Police Department.
