Families Left Homeless After Spartanburg Apartment Fire

Fire ripped through a Spartanburg apartment complex early Saturday morning destroying one unit and leaving several families homeless.

The fire happened just before 4 am Saturday at Whispering Pines Apartments on 480 Abner Road in Spartanburg. Firefighters from five area fire departments, Westview-Fairforest, Una, North Spartanburg, Duncan and City of Spartanburg, responded to the scene where the unit was fully engulfed. By the time it was under control. the structure was declared a total loss and five families lost their belongings.

Some neighbors didn't even realize what had happened until they woke up in the morning. "It's really frightening to me because it hit so close to home and we have children." Ashley Smales.

Volunteers from the Piedmont Chapter of the American Red Cross have responded to assist the families," said Executive Director Rochelle N. Brown. "We are proud that we can be here for the families. I'm proud that our trained Disaster Action Team volunteers and staff were able to report to the scene quickly and provide support for these families during this difficult time."

One firefighter had to be hospitalized with an undisclosed injury, according to Spartanburg County officials. Although, the injury is not considered life threatening.
