Matti Ross is one of the big stars of the John Wayne western "True Grit". The character is a sassy, tough-as-nails girl looking for the man who shot her Daddy. She insists on going with two marshals to hunt down the killer.
The Coen Brothers and Paramount are remaking the movie and want Mattie Ross to be their lead character. Casting Director Tracy Kilpatrick from "The Casting Office" in Wilmington, North Carolina told News Channel 7 she has already audtioned more than 1500 girls in four cities. Her latest stop: Greenville, South Carolina.
"This is a big deal for Greenville," said aspiring actress Hannah Mullinax.
On Tuesday hundreds of girls between 12 and 16-years-old waited in line at the Comfort Inn on Laurens Road to have their chance to be the next big star.
"They said the part for it had to be spunky, I'm pretty spunky and outgoing," said aspiring actress Raegan Binnefield as she cocked her hip to show of her attitude.
As they practiced their lines, hundreds of family members and friends waited patiently inside the packed hotel ballroom hoping their actress would be the next to play Mattie Ross.
"To her it would mean the world, to me it would mean a big change," said parent Tammy Gladden as she talked about her daughter.
Kilpatrick said filming should begin in the Spring of 1010. Paramount Pictures confirmed Matt Damon and Jeff Bridges have signed on to the film.
