For a person who's made a career out of putting criminals behind bars, threats have become about as common as the courtroom for Solicitor Trey Gowdy. "I've lost count of how many I've received," the 7th Circuit Solicitor says. "Every one has a different twist." Gowdy received the most recent threat on October 23, 2009. "It was brought to me by a law enforcement officer who said you need to see this, and do you know the person who wrote it?"
Authorities say the person who wrote the letter was Jermaine Nelson. The 22 year old is currently serving a 15 year sentence for burglary at McCormick Correctional Institute. Deputies say he also sent a letter to Assistant Solicitor Ryan McCarty. The note was short, but to the point. "It was not terribly well drafted," says Gowdy. "I could make out the word 'kill' pretty easily." Still, the threat makes so sense since he's never prosecuted Nelson before. "He did give me the option to resign before he killed me," says Gowdy.
State, federal, and Spartanburg County investigators are investigating the threat, and promising a quick punishment. Spartanburg Sheriff Chuck Wright says, "We're not going to have any mercy on him if that's what you want to know. We're not going to have any mercy on him, everything I can charge him with, I'm going to charge him with it."
As for Gowdy, he says he'll continue to carry protection, but he'll pass on that offer to resign. He says when it's your job to put people in jail, keeping them there is even more satisfaction. "If his intention was to scare me, I'm very hard to scare."
