When Anthony McDaniel got laid off from a warehouse months ago he never thought he'd be filling out applications next to a Christmas tree.
"I just got a little girl, I got to try to do what I can," said McDaniel
It's an attitude that many job seekers abandon during the holiday.
At Express Employment, a staffing agency in Spartanburg, the number of applicants has dropped off a bit. But owner, Karen Knuckles, says contrary to popular belief the holiday season is a great time to find a job.
"December is a time when you think people are not in their office and they're winding down for vacation, but they are still in their office, they are still working, they still understand what there staffing plan is for next year," said Knuckles.
And, she ads, they're more likely to take your call when they're caught up in the cheerful holiday mood.
Knuckles should know. She just hired sales associate Cindy Randall last week.
"I had given myself basically until February to look for a job. And so when this opportunity came along, I grabbed it," said Randall.
And if you can't find a full time job, job agencies say getting temporary work is a great way to make connections and they're reporting a 10 to 15 percent rise in demand for temps in the last quarter.
Economists say the up-tick in the hiring of temporary workers is a good sign because cautious employees typically hire temps in a recovery before bringing on full time staff.
And that's just what McDaniel is hoping to do.
"You can't give up no-matter what happens, you gotta keep going," said McDaniel.
