The Laurens County Sheriff's Office has charged a man with murder in the death of his girlfriend.
Early Thursday evening, Laurens County Sheriff Ricky Chastain confirmed to News Channel 7 that 51-year old Fred Lewis Madden Jr. had been charged with murder after he was questioned in the death of his girlfriend, 58-year old Ernestine Brown. According to Chastain, Brown's brother arrived at a home at 7387 Highway 308 in Laurens around 11 am and told investigators that Madden had just left on a moped, He went inside, and found his sister's body. According to reports, the victim had just called another family member and said Madden "threatened to kill her." Chastain says, "It appears there have been some domestic issues that have been going on for some time now."
Investigators say they believe that Madden shot Brown at the residence, where they both lived, and Madden fled to another residence. Recent records indicate Brown was trying to kick Madden out of the home as recently as last week. The tragedy is all too common this time of year, according to the Sheriff. "During the holiday season, and especially here in Laurens County with the economic situation we're facing, these things tend to add up."
Madden was booked into the Laurens County Detention Center, and will face a magistrate judge Friday.
