A new health care clinic opened in Spartanburg County. It’s located at the Middle Tyger Community Center in Lyman. ReGenesis Health Care is one of 20 federally qualified community health centers in South Carolina and the only of its kind in Spartanburg and Cherokee counties.
When you are ten months old like Lucas, you visit the doctor on a regular basis.” For his check up, or if he has any problems," says his mom 18-year-old Nikki Herrada. Herrada wants to be a nurse. Part of the Palmetto Youth Program, Nikki is working on her G.E.D. at the Middle Tyger Community Center in Lyman. She also works there part-time and will now be able to get healthcare for herself and Lucas too. Herrada says, "I don't have to worry taking him going all the way to Greenville, because right now he has a doctor in Greenville.” The ReGenesis Health Care Center opened December 1st, and Thursday celebrated with an open house. It’s a non-profit organization that seeks to provide comprehensive, high-quality health care to anyone who needs it.
Dr. Monique Fox will be taking care of patients. Dr. Fox says, "I believe that it's important that everyone believes they are entitled to quality health care. There is this pre-conceived notion that the level of care you get is how much money you make, and we believe at ReGenesis, that you deserve quality care, no matter what your income level is."
It’s a perfect partnership for the Middle Tyger Community Center, according to Executive Director Wanda Fowler. "As we serve the adolescent mothers and adolescent parents and the rest of the community, we want our community to have the resources they need so that they can be healthy and well," says Fowler.
In addition to medical services to children and families, the clinic will offer family planning, HIV screening, immunizations and diabetes education. It will help lighten the load for Lucas’s mom a little bit, as she tries to build a future for herself and her son.” Like if he gets sick, I know where I can bring him up here and get him checked out,” she says.
The Middle Tyger Community Center will see patients Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. They will also offer lab services, case management services, and community based health education.
