Longtime Cowpens Mayor Dies At 75

Former Cowpens Mayor William White died Saturday after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

Former Cowpens Mayor William White died Saturday after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

White served as Mayor of Cowpens from 1991-2992 and prior to be elected, he served on the Cowpens Town Council for 15 years, in which he also served as President of the Spartanburg County Municipal Association. A longtime resident of Cowpens, White's first job was with the Department of Agriculture and later worked for Hoechst Celanese before retiring in 1988.

He served in the United States Army Reserve during the Korean War and was a member of the Cowpens Lions Club and Salem United Methodist Church. He was an avid sports fan and pulled for the St. Louis Cardinals and Atlanta Braves. He graduated from Cowpens High School and Spartanburg Methodist College.

Visitation will be from 6-8 pm Tuesday at Floyd's Greenlawn Mortuary, located at 2075 E. Main St. in Spartanburg. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday at 2 pm at Salem United Methodist Church.

White was 75 years old.
