Anderson SC - The Tenth Circuit Solicitor released a statement today about the investigation of a suspect's death during an arrest in Anderson in September.
The solicitors office says there will no state criminal charges filed in the death of Robert Thompson.
They say Thompson was a passenger in a car that was stopped by Anderson Police for a traffic violation. When police discovered that Thompson had an outstanding warrant they attemptemted to take him into custody.
They say Thompson pushed the car door into one of the officers and ran.
After an intense struggle they say an officer was forced to place his arms around Thompson in a way that resulted in Thompson's neck being pressed against hi own arm.
According to the report the struggle lasted about two and a half minutes.
They say the evidence showed that Thompson was still breathing when handcuffs were placed on him and for several minutes afterward.
An autopsy revealed that the cause of death was asphyxia due to neck vascular compression.
According to Dr. Woodard, the autopsy results are consistent with the evidence present by SLED.
They say during the initial traffic stop Thompson told the other people in the car that if the police tried to arrest him he was going to run.
Police say Thompson has a history of resisting arrest and during the struggle the officer attempted to release his grip several times while instructing Thompson to stop resisting.
They said Thompson failed to comply throughout the arrest process.
