COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Schools, health care, social services and
prisons are up for another round of budget cuts as the state's
financial oversight board tries to keep a $5.3 billion spending
plan from falling behind.
The state Budget and Control Board meets Tuesday and plans to
discuss cutting at least $122.4 million. House budget committee
chairman Dan Cooper says the cuts could end up being twice that.
South Carolina's 12 percent unemployment rate in October was the
nation's fifth highest and is a leading cause of plunging state
revenues.
The planned reductions would cut a minimum of $53 million from
schools, $20 million from Medicaid and $3 million from the state's
welfare, child protection and food stamp programs.
