With a 74% increase in the number of homeless students over the total in 2004, South Carolina educators are doing what they can to battle the problems. Communities are reaching out too, and they want to make sure children don't go without this time of year.
The Christmas House in Spartanburg County is a youth center for the Middle Tyger Community Center during the year, but it's transformed into a gift hub for the holidays. They will help more than 1200 children with toys and clothing, but there still 50 on the list for whom they need donations. Lyn Turner, Compassion Grant Volunteer Coordinator, says they have the toys covered. They say cash donations, or clothing is now needed. Turner says, “We like to see each child get at least one outfit of clothing or a jacket, gloves, hats, scarves, that kind of thing to keep you warm in January and February."
