WEST SIDE ANNEXATION PLAN
The City of Spartanburg voted to move forward with its proposal of annexing several county subdivisions on the westside of Spartanburg to up its population, in an effort to increase tax revenue.
The projected money growth for the city would be about $500,000 a year.
Some of those subdivisions include Shannon Forest off of Southport Road, Blackstock Trace, Bordeaux and a few others.
More than 841 properties are included in the proposal. The plan would increase the city's population by about 1600 residents.
The city says trash, fire and police services that are currently offered in the city limits would also extend to the new residents.
At Tuesday night's meeting, westside residents packed the county council chambers (which served as the city meeting place), to express their concerns over the plan.
In the end, the city council was not swayed.
A lawsuit will be filed Wednesday morning on behalf of a group of residents, in an effort to postpone the city's actions.
Those concerned homeowners worry about the city taxes and affect on property sales. And many question if in fact the city services will outweigh the additional tax payments.
The city says they are confident they will have the percentage of homes in agreement needed to go forward with the plan.
