The Anderson County Animal Shelter is asking you to save a life and bring a pet home for the holidays. More than 175 dogs were brought to the shelter after they were seized from a home less than a month ago. Those animals may have to be housed for up to a year while the case goes through the court system, leaving little room for other county strays. The Rusty Burns, Anderson County Interim Administrator said, if these animals aren't adopted within a few months, they could be euthanized.
"Our other animal population could possibly have to be euthanized and we absolutely detest that and it's a hard necessity," said Burns.
So the shelter is having an adoption drive, offering adoptions for $35, which is half off the normal cost. The shelter also brought animals to the county's historic courthouse Tuesday afternoon, to grab the attention of animal lovers.
Burns himself is even adopting- his pick, a three-legged dog which he may decide to name Spanky, after The Little Rascals character.
"My three legged dog died and my three legged cat is lonely, so we're going to get another three legged dog," said Burns.
If you can't adopt, you can still help. The shelter is in need of the following:
• Pedigree Dog/Puppy Food (canned & dry)
• Blankets
• Towels
• Newspapers/Shredded paper
• Bleach
• Dish Detergent
• Laundry Detergent
• Cat Litter
• Whiskas Cat/Kitten Food (canned & dry)
