NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina's newest interstate
has officially opened to traffic.
Cars and trucks started driving Thursday morning on the final
leg of Interstate 520, also called the Palmetto Parkway. The
interstate is called the Bobby Jones Expressway when it crosses
into Georgia.
The road goes from Interstate 20 at North Augusta across the
Savannah River and across the south side of Augusta, Ga., before
intersecting I-20 again in Georgia.
The South Carolina portion of I-520 cost $255 million and was
built in two phases. Georgia and South Carolina split the cost for
the new bridge over the Savannah River.
Aiken County Council Chairman Ronnie Young says the new highway
should help bring more industry and other businesses to the area.
