Gates urges UGA grads to public service

»  Comments | Post a Comment

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Defense Secretary Robert Gates says college graduates should consider entering public service, especially as they enter the job market
amid a turbulent economy.

Gates was the featured speaker Friday during the fall graduation ceremony at the University of Georgia.

His speech made little mention of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Instead, he expounded on the virtues of public service outside the military.

Gates told more than 1,000 graduates in Athens that, despite the weak job market, there are still opportunities in government.

Gates spent most of his career with the Central Intelligence Agency, including a stint as the CIA's director.

Before being sworn in as defense secretary three years ago, he served as president of Texas A&M University.
