Serial Bank Robber Pleads Guilty In Tennessee Bank Robbery Case

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - An Indianapolis man who was the subject of an intense manhunt utilizing billboards has pleaded guilty to bank robbery and other charges in Tennessee.
Thirty-six-year-old Chad Schaffner, whose picture was posted on electronic billboards across the South before his arrest, pleaded guilty Thursday in U.S. District Court in Greeneville.
The Justice Department said in a news release he has bank robbery charges pending in North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois.
The FBI had turned to electronic billboards late last summer after traditional investigations failed.
Schaffner is to be sentenced in the Tennessee case next Aug. 9. The banks involved were in Morristown and Jefferson City, both robbed on Aug. 18.
