Four emergency shelters have been opened for citizens in Buncombe County.
Due to the increasing amount of snowfall, Buncombe County Emergency Management opened a shelter at Valley Springs Middle School, located at 224 Long Shoals Road, in Arden; Enka Middle School, located at 390 Asbury Road, in Candler; Erwin High School, located at 60 Lees Creek Rd., in Asheville, and Black Nountain Elementary, located at 100 Flat Creek Road, in Black Mountain. Thus far snowfall totals are ranging from 8-15 inches throughout most areas in the western North Carolina mountains.
Earlier tonight, Buncombe County Emergency officials urged citizens to stay off the roads and suspend all non-essential travel.
"It is critical for citizens to stay off the roads and remain at home for their own safety and the safety of other citizens and emergency rescue personnel," said Asheville Mayor Terry Bellamy. "I also want to encourage people to check on their neighbors, especially the elderly who may be without extra support during extreme weather conditions."
Ploice, fire, emergency response and public works personnel are operating on a 24-hour schedule and crews continue to clear high priority areas. Citizens are urged to call 911 in the event of an emergency.
Additional snow accumulations of up to five inches are possible, with a mix of sleet and freezing rain through Saturday evening.
