Fire damaged a dormitory room on the Clemson University campus early Tuesday morning. There were no injuries.

The fire call to the sixth floor of Byrnes Hall came in at 4:17am. Byrnes Hall is a ten-story dorm for freshmen students with just over 400 residents and was built in 1970.

All residents were evacuated from the dorm by the time fire crews arrived less than five minutes after the call according to Clemson Media Relations spokesman John Gouch.

A wall decoration in one room caught fire and burned a mattress and bedding before setting the wall on fire. A sprinkler contained the flames until firefighters arrived to put it out.

The 5th and 6th floors sustained the most extensive water damage.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

The Clemson University Fire Department says there is smoke and water damage to some dormitory rooms on the fifth and sixth floor. Residents have been allowed back into the other parts of Byrnes Hall.

Residents of rooms on the fifth and sixth floor that suffered smoke and water damage are expected to be able to return to by Tuesday night.
